The Christie charity provides enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds. Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to our patients and their families. We couldn’t be more grateful for everything you do.

This year The Christie was delighted to join in the national celebrations of our NHS’s 70th birthday. Whilst The Christie itself has a legacy for helping cancer patients for more than 100 years, we are proud to belong to the NHS and we couldn’t let the milestone pass without marking it with some special events.

We thought it would be a great way to round off our year with a quick look back at some of the things our wonderful supporters have achieved in the last 12 months - and of course some of the projects your unwavering support has helped us fund, as well as a few ideas for ways to get involved in 2019! Once again, thank you.

2 Back in 2016 Michael Gilmore signed up to the Manchester to Blackpool Bike Ride in order to support his mother Ann, who was receiving treatment at The Christie. Three years and dozens of events later Michael has a raised over £3,000 for The Christie charity and isn’t stopping yet! COMMITTED TO THE CHRISTIE

1. A HALF MARATHON IN FLIPPERS

Over the past couple of years Craig Keatley, aka Flipper Keatz, has completed several challenges in aid of The Christie all whilst wearing some unusual footwear - his signature

But her death has inspired Michael and his family to carry on fundraising and they have tackled skydives, cycling and running marathons in her memory. flippers. This year Craig walked coast to coast from one side of the UK to the other in his final challenge. He has managed to raise a fantastic overall total of over £4,000. 3. £55,000 RAISED BY MORSON 2017-18. Throughout the year, the local recruitment agency organised a number of exciting events in a bid to reach their ambitious fundraising target of £55,000. All of the Morson team were involved in fundraising. They have done everything from skydives, abseils, bake off to bike rides. Due to their outstanding fundraising Morson was selected as The Christie charity’s Fundraiser of the Month in January 2018. On behalf of the charity we would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone at Morson Group who helped to raise an incredible £55,000! The Christie charity was lucky enough to be selected as Morson’s charity partner across

fundraising and hope his commitment to undertaking sporting events for The Christie inspires others to take on a challenge themselves!

4 MUSIC FESTIVALS SUPPORTED THE CHRISTIE 5 In 2018 Nicola Stewart was discharged from The Christie, following her diagnosis and successful treatment of cervical cancer in 2013. RUNNING FIVE MARATHONS FOR EACH YEAR OF REMISSION

To mark this occasion, she decided to run FIVE marathons in 2018 - one for each year of remission. Thankfully she was not alone and put together her own team of ‘Nicola’s Christie Soldiers’ to tackle a series of events with her. From her daughters’ Rainbow Unit running a cumulative marathon, to friends taking on a 1000KM challenge – Nicola is inspiring everyone around her! Well done Nicola!

Boot out Breast Cancer was formed by Debbie Dowie in 2010 after being diagnosed with breast cancer. September saw their Gatsby Glamour ball in aid of The Christie. The ball managed to raise an outstanding £125,000 and we were also delighted when they announced a two year fundraising partnership with The Christie. 6. GATSBY BALL BRINGS IN £125,000

7. WHAT A MARATHON EFFORT! For three years now Vicky Lampard has run the Chester Half Marathon with her amazing team of friends and family. The team run in support of Vicky’s mum and so far they have raised an amazing £10,000 towards our haematology and transplant unit. 9 This year the Women’s Trust Fund Ladies Committee is celebrating 70 years of fundraising. Lady Margaret Holt was the first president of the committee which formed back in 1948 with 26 groups. The ladies are still going strong with three of the groups still remaining and over the years have worked hard raising millions for The Christie. 70 YEARS OF FUNDRAISING

Norton Barrie host an annual golf day at Northenden Golf Club every year for The Christie. July 2018 marked the 10th anniversary of the celebration and the day was a huge success. Thank you to owner Blake Norton who continues to raise money in memory of his dad Barry. 10. TEE OFF FOR THE CHRISTIE

11. IT’S KOOL FOR LANKYKATS Thanks go to the Lankykats Collective for choosing us as one of its beneficiary charities for a second year. The Lankykats organises rock and roll gigs around the North West for bands that were around in the 50s, 60s and 70s to take to the stage again. The bands play for free and all proceeds are awarded to local charities through an Annual Lankykat Support Award (ALSA). The ALSA award is used to support music therapy sessions on our teenage & young adult unit.

12. THE OTHER BOAT RACE! Manchester Home Team has been holding the Northenden Boat Race in support of The Christie for 12 years. The Northenden Boat Race takes place every August and everyone from the local community joins together to watch or take part in the boat race. The group holds a bucket collection and offers refreshments in return for a donation to The Christie.

INCREDIBLE £¼ MILLION TARGET REACHED 13 Joyce and John Shacklock raise donations in memory of their son Daniel. This year they have reached a fundraising target of £250,000 which was their goal, started back in 1995. Congratulations and thank you for your incredible support.

Vera Cohen is an amazing 102 years and recently handed in her final donation to The Christie after many years of fundraising . She sadly can’t continue with her baking due to health reasons. Vera has baked cakes for 17 years and the majority of her donations have been donated to the gastrointestinal research fund. Baking really helped Vera come to terms with her daughter’s death and helped her to focus her thoughts on something positive.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY NANTWICH SUPPORT GROUP 25 The Nantwich Christie Hospital Support Group has celebrated their 25th anniversary of fundraising for The Christie this year. The group held a silver themed ball at Wrenbury Hall in June. The group originally started raising money in support of chairman Sarah Darlington’s father who was being treated at The Christie - and they have not stopped since. They host popular events ranging from their annual ‘flag day’ collection, race nights, quiz nights, Easter bingo and the odd charity ball!

26. SPORTING SUCCESS RAISED +£5K The Irish Association Golfers have raised £5,500 for The Christie yet again this year. Each year they manage to raise exactly £33,000 from their charity golf day and split the money between their six chosen charities.

27. PROTON FUNDING MAKES ROOM FOR RESEARCH

£5.6 million donated to the proton beam research room at the UK’s first high energy proton beam therapy centre at The Christie.

28 YABBA DABBA DOO!

The Yabba Dabba Doo is an annual event created and hosted by Jan Trevalyan in Latham, Lancashire. Since 2015, this showstopper event has raised over £135,000 in support of the proton beam therapy research room and 3D interventional radiology projects.

“I think it’s important to give back where you can. The funds raised will do an incredible amount of good.” Jan, a supporter of The Christie for many years.

Sponsored by The DDC Group, the Doo raises awareness and donations while keeping guests highly entertained with its spectacular agenda and setting. Guests enjoy stunning performances, incredible food and fabulous fireworks whilst digging deep in support of The Christie charity. In May, Jan’s good friend Toby Hester hosted a Doo in Bisham Abbey in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, raising more money for The Christie and The Royal Marsden. We are thrilled to receive such loyal support from Jan and everyone involved in the Yabba Dabba Doo. 40. CITYWIDE BANQUET RAISES OVER £1/2 MILLION

Manchester came together for the first city-wide banquet which raised over £527,000 for the Tim Bacon Foundation which is generously supporting The Christie’s proton beam therapy project. Tim, a former Christie patient who sadly passed away in 2016, was the co-founder of the Living Ventures empire with current CEO Jeremy Roberts. After a year of planning, more than 1,000 diners descended on eight Living Ventures restaurants including Manchester House, Australasia, Artisan, and GUSTO, for the amazing Dream the Impossible Dream charity event.

45 FAMILY RAISE VITAL FUNDS IN WILL’S NAME The family of a young man who was treated at The Christie for leukaemia is continuing to raise funds in his name – and the total currently stands at a staggering £36,000.

Will Clark was treated at our teenage and young adult unit where he became known as someone who readily befriended new patients, helping them settle into their treatment by sharing his experiences and encouraging them to take part in activities. Will sadly died in October 2017 aged 23, a year after he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, a disease that affects the blood and bones. But his family are determined to keep Will’s spirit going by supporting the unit’s activities fund. “It was such an important part of Will’s care”, said Trevor, Will’s dad. “The days can

be long, and time can pass slowly. The social activities are an essential part of the treatment; they help keep morale up.” The fund pays for all manner of activities, including restaurant and football trips, art, craft and music lessons and technology for patients’ bedrooms. The activities not only help patients make friends with each other, giving them an essential support network, they also provide a welcome distraction from their illness and treatment. The family has adopted the hashtag #IWill as a call to arms whenever they want to alert supporters to a new fundraising endeavour.

“When we started fundraising, we wanted to contribute to the activities fund because we saw first-hand how important it is.” Trevor, Will’s dad.

47 We also said a big thank you to Gemma Kenney and Katie Swash who raised £20,341 from their ‘Balls 2 Cancer’ charity ball events. Gemma and Katie met in 2012 at The Christie when they were diagnosed with breast cancer and together they faced 14 months of treatment, before being put on a clinical trial which proved successful. Having become close friends for life, the ladies now support the clinical trials unit at the hospital to help increase survival rates in other patients. Together they have organised three fabulous charity balls, taken part in a sponsored skydive, the Great Manchester Run, bag packing at local supermarkets and much more! Now both in remission, Gemma and Katie are celebrating beating their original £20,000 fundraising target. Thank you both so much for your support, we think you’re amazing! Current patient Matthew Dyson wanted to thank The Christie for the care and treatment he has received and decided to hold his first ever fundraising event, a 365 charity ball. The event was held at The Lowry Hotel in November and raised an incredible £40,281. The money raised from this event will be directed to the haematology and transplant unit fund at The Christie.

with cancer, his colleagues at Booths wanted to do something to show David how much they care and decided The Christie should be their nominated charity. David and his colleagues at Booths have so far raised nearly £12,000 through various workplace events including a Christmas raffle and a Valentine’s Day raffle and various dress down days. In December they held a charity Christmas quiz night where over 100 colleagues were entertained by their two hosts dressed as panto dames. Many of Booths' suppliers have also donated some very generous gifts as part of the raffles and Booths are looking to hold further events including a Summer quiz and BBQ. David said: “The Christie is an amazing place and I am so thankful for the chance these clinical trials have given me. I was initially told to expect to live around two years, but at the moment I feel great so I am hopeful the drugs might continue to work.”

David Kearney was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February 2016. After feeling unwell and losing weight he visited his doctors for a PSA, a specialist blood test that detects prostate cancer. Unfortunately the results revealed it was highly likely to be cancer. Following his diagnosis, it was soon discovered the cancer had spread to his liver, back and stomach. Due to his relatively young age, his cancer was particularly aggressive and he was warned conventional treatment was unlikely to be successful. Since then David has been on a number of clinical trials with new drugs available at The Christie. He is currently taking a trial drug called zytega which is so far proving successful at keeping the cancer at bay. David is still working, enjoying holidays with his family and even going to the gym three times a week. David works in product development for Booths Supermarkets. Due to David’s battle

Fleetwood Cancer Committee has been fundraising for The Christie for over 60 years. The current chairman is Susan Pearce and they fundraise all across Fleetwood, Blackpool and the surrounding areas. They look after a market stall which is open four days a week in Fleetwood selling variety of goods, they host monthly coffee mornings, look after collection boxes and are planning a spring sponsored walk in 2019, as well as supporting other local fundraising events.

Since 2013 all contestants have helped to support our cause in a variety of ways, overall contributing over £233,000! 62. MANCHESTER SOUL FESTIVAL IS A HIT The Printworks Committee has held the Manchester Soul Festival for four years in a row to raise money for The Christie. The Printworks Soul Committee works hard throughout the year to continue the work of their much loved friend, relative and Manchester Soul Legend, Frank Byrne. Frank was treated at The Christie but sadly passed away last year. In 2015, Frank set up Manchester’s very first soul festival at The Printworks to bring families together, celebrate the best of Northern Soul and Motown music and raise funds for The Christie. They have just reached their target of £100,000.

67 Supporters Claire Bennison and Sharon Chantry hosted a ladies lunch in aid of re-development of our CT scanning facilities. The afternoon was held at Grafene restaurant with a meal was provided by Michelin Star chef Ben Mounsey along with an afternoon of entertainment and a fashion show. 70 GREAT MANCHESTER RUN 70 FOR 70 In recognition of 70 years of the NHS, The Christie charity recruited 70 members of staff to conquer this year’s Great Manchester Run!

As part of the ’70 Staff for 70 Years’ team, employees from all areas of The Christie took part, each with their own motivations for taking on the challenge. From pharmacy staff to research associates, all 70 members of the team took to the city centre streets, all in the distinctive blue charity t-shirts, to run, jog or walk the 10km distance whilst raising funds and celebrating this fantastic NHS milestone. The team was led by Christie consultant, Dr Was Mansoor, who has previously taken part in the run numerous times. He said: “The NHS is an institution we are all proud to be

part of, and this is a wonderful milestone to celebrate. What better way than to come together and show the true team spirit with colleagues joining together to raise money to further improve services.” Another team member was Jason Simons, a trainee nurse practitioner in surgery, whose partner has also been treated at The Christie. He said: “I’m really proud to work at The Christie and I’m proud to be part of the 70 for 70 team. Many of my friends and family have been touched by cancer and this is my way of saying thank you.” Well done to all of our 70 for 70 runners!
