The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Annual Report & Accounts 2021-22

Greener NHS

As a forward thinking organisation, the Christie is committed to sustainable healthcare, and we recognise it is our duty to contribute towards the level of ambition set out in in Delivering a ‘Net Zero’ National Health Service. The Delivering a ‘Net Zero’ National Health Service report provides targets to reduce system wide carbon emissions within direct control (NHS Carbon Footprint) to net zero by 2040, and wider indirect carbon emissions including the supply chain (NHS Carbon Footprint Plus) by 2045, with interim 80% reduction targets by 2028-2032 and 2036-39 respectively. The NHS emissions reduction targets are set against a 1990 baseline. The interim targets are – as defined in October 2020 when the Net Zero targets were set – equivalent to: • Reducing NHS Carbon Footprint by at least 47% from 2019/20 levels by 2028 2032; • Reducing NHS Carbon Footprint Plus by at least 73% from 2019/20 levels by 2036-2038 These are the most ambitious targets of any healthcare system in the world to address the impact of the sector and address the climate and health emergency.

Green Plan The Trust developed a new Sustainable Development Management Plan (Green Plan) using the online NHS sustainable development assessment tool (SDAT), which uses four cross cutting themes: • Governance and policy • Core responsibilities

• Procurement and supply chain • Working with staff, patients and communities

The toolkit is being used as a baseline and will support measuring progress and help make plans for the future. The Trust has appointed a sustainability manager and a sustainable development committee (SDC) to drive through the objectives and obligations within the Green Plan. The SDC includes staff from across the divisions and grades to provide a wide-reaching network and skill sets. The SDAT is due to be replaced with the Green Plan Support Tool. The Trust will undertake an assessment of the Green Plan as soon as the new tool is available. The results of which will be used for measuring progress going forward. 2021/2022 Key Highlights North West Greener NHS Innovation Fund Following an application to the NW Greener NHS Innovation Fund, a project team at The Christie has been awarded nearly £10,000 to estimate the carbon footprint of the radiotherapy pathway. Different parts of the radiotherapy pathway including patient travel, linac and imaging power consumption, consultations and other medicines that patients require will be analysed retrospectively. Two time periods, before and during COVID-19 will be used to assess the impact of changes in practice during this period. It is hoped to identify the hotspots of the radiotherapy pathway so that we can focus on reducing the environmental impact of those.
