The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Annual Report & Accounts 2021-22

Regional and international work Working in partnership with GM Cancer during the year has been a key feature of this year. Various teams have worked closely with GM Cancer in a variety of projects, including the Digital Learning Team, Education Events Team, and Maguire Communication Skills. Internationally, the Digital Learning Team has also seen a noticeable expansion of international partnerships. An ongoing partnership via the Global Health project, includes working alongside colleagues in Uganda and Kenya. The SoO remains a key provider in supporting education work with the hospital project in Abuja, Nigeria; the cancer aspects of this project are being managed by the Christie International Team, working closely with the lead partner, Kings Commercial Services. The Christie Library has been commissioned by the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) to lead on an evidence review. This review will form the basis of newly published international guidelines for treating older people with Squamous Cell Carcinomas. Guidelines will be published in 2023. In January 2021, the Christie Library launched the new Knowledge and Library Hub. The Hub brings together a vast range of information and knowledge in the form of databases, journals, NICE guidance, BMJ Best Practice and other support tools all in one place and free to staff and students via their OpenAthens account. In April 2021, the library launched The Christie Proton Library, a source of online seminars and published research on the subject of proton beam therapy. The Proton Library is updated monthly and features videos, podcasts and links to papers which are relevant for Christie staff working in the field of proton beam therapy.

The Maguire team has continued to deliver its highly regarded communication skills programme via online services. In addition, the team have delivered supervision and coaching sessions to the Christie and to external organisations. The team has worked closely with the Digital Learning Team on the development of resources for pharmaceutical colleagues. In May 2021, The School hosted an international Haematology Oncology review with colleagues from across the Christie, MCRC, CRUKMI and UoM. The review was extremely successful and complimentary of our programme here. The panellists gave future recommendations which bolstered continued efforts across our myeloid, lymphoid and transplant themes and gave further guidance on interconnectivities to be focussed on. We were also successful in 2021 in obtaining a spot on the Health Education England-Yale University Digital Futures programme (Fabio Gomes, Rachel Chown). We are now part-way through the programme and have developed a project that will look at interventions for senior patients with frailty – initially focussing on those from Tameside borough in a pilot study before expanding. We will present our finding to Yale faculty in July 2022. We launched the new EDI seminar series in January 2022 focussing on different underrepresented groups in STEM and involving several Christie colleagues, notably Rob Bristow and Dan Saunders in our first session which looked at LGBTQ+ in cancer research. This session was highly successful and had >100 attendees online. This is a collaboration with Barts Cancer Institute and our next session on Women in Science is due in March 2022. We will continue to collaborate throughout the year and hope to have an inaugural in-person keynote/workshop in January 2023 and expand into EDI-based research projects with London colleagues in due course.
