Public Board of Directors papers 29.09.22

Strategic and Service Developments Progress continues to be made on implementation of our planned strategic and service developments. We are coming towards the end of implementation of our existing strategic planning period and now working to prepare a strategy for the five years from 2023. In line with our strategic plan, the Senior Adult Oncology Service, providing a holistic approach to improving the care and experience for patients with frailty who are undergoing treatment for cancer at The Christie, has been established. The service is led by Consultant Medical Oncologist Dr Fabio Gomes and comprises a multidisciplinary team including medical, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and dietetics expertise. The Paterson site project progresses, with handover of the facility planned for March 2023. The University of Manchester’s research equipment has been installed and will be commissioned over the next few months ready for the Home Office validation works. The project and preparations are overseen by a formal project governance structure with the Project Board chaired by The Christie’s CEO. Other major capital projects include the installation of the MR scanner, pharmacy outpatients, and the replacement of radiotherapy equipment at the Oldham and Salford sites. The Carbon Energy Fund Scheme work will be completed in February 2023. This will both reduce the Trust’s operational running costs and save 1,025 tonnes of carbon per year. The scheme includes the installation of solar photovoltaic panels, battery energy saving storage, LED energy efficient lighting upgrades and replacement of our combined heat and power boiler plant, as well as replacing parts of our aged steam heating infrastructure with more energy efficient low temperature hot water systems. In line with our objective to provide high quality care we have been designated as a European Prostate Cancer Centre for Excellence. Two of our teams (SACT and Complementary Therapy) are finalists in the Nursing Times Awards. As we come towards the end of our current strategic plan, work has been taking place to develop our 5-year plan for 2023 onwards. The board has contributed to the development so far through participation in the service review day on 1 st July 2022 and the board development day on 14 th July 2022. Further discussion is planned for the away day on 7 th October with a board discussion on 27 th October. This brings together work on clinical outcomes, research and education with other supporting and cross cutting strategies such as those for estates, digital and people and our contribution to system wide priorities including health inequalities and sustainability. For example, The Christie People & Culture Plan supports all that we do to attract, recruit, develop, retain, support and reward our people and teams to meet our future service needs. It has been developed under the leadership of the Workforce Director. The Research Strategy is being led by the Director of Research and will address a wide range of issues including our relationships with academic institutions including through the Manchester Cancer Research Centre our partnership with the University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK. The Education Strategy also considers a wide range of issues including our own status as an educational institute and ability to diversify education related income streams. These and other pieces of work support the emerging overall strategy which sits within parameters discussed by the board. Following further development over the coming months, the refreshed strategy will be brought to the board for approval in March 2023 together with an assessment of progress against the current strategy.
