Meeting of the Board of Directors Thursday 28th April 2022

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION UPDATE

Purpose To provide the Board with an update on progress against objectives of The Research and

Innovation Division. Executive Summary

Good progress has been made against key objectives. It has been a challenging period to respond to pressures of post covid recovery and to ensure that learning from the NHS Investigation has been enacted to embed positive culture within the division where all members of staff feel valued to contribute to the objectives and ambitions of the division. Activity has been maintained at a high level against national standards and key metrics with notable successes in grants and major publications. Work to synergise the excellence of staff and investigators to ensure future success is underway within the Division through a process of targeted meetings, discussions and focused ‘deep dives’. Inclusion of all views and collaborative decision making of stakeholders across a diverse research community is informing research strategy and delivery. Work is ongoing to scope and summarise inclusively the breadth and depth of research activity in order to highlight gaps and unmet need, share best practice, develop next generation of researchers and modernise R&I Engage with R and I staff to reflect and act on the learning and recommendations of the NHSE Investigation and to develop strategies for improved health and wellbeing at work. 2. Maintain and develop workforce in terms of wellbeing, working environment, contracts, recruitment to vacancies, PDR and essential training compliance. 3. Accelerate research recovery following the covid pandemic. 4. Ensure that R and I complies with all regulatory requirements governing research. 5. Establish robust processes for innovation in data sciences, real world evidence and clinical outcomes research with academic and commercial partners. 6. Secure renewal of research grant funding 2022- 2027. 7. Enable design and delivery of investigator led academic research. 8. Develop patient and public involvement and engagement Key Objectives for period April 2022 – October 2022 Objectives 1-8 above will be ongoing Additional objectives 9. Refresh and embed new R&I strategy in alignment with other Christie clinical strategies (service and education) and NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, Clinical Research Facility and CRUK Major Centre strategic objectives 10. Finance Deep Dive: Review of current income and expenditure to identify opportunities for growth and development 11. Strategy for Organisational Development research support to meet current and future needs. Key Objectives for period ending April 2022 1.
