Christie Scanning and Imaging Centre brochure

Every day families hear the life-altering words “You have cancer.” For many, precise treatment planning can mean the difference between life and death. BACKGROUND

At The Christie we urgently need to build a fit for purpose, modern scanning centre to house an advanced 4D CT scanner. The new scanner isn’t just an upgrade – it’s a huge leap forward in scanning allowing us to treat cancer smarter, faster, and more effectively. Scanning is one of the most important aspects of cancer treatment. With your support we can bring hope to the thousands of patients and families who walk through our doors each year. Thousands of Christie patients will have at least one CT (Computerised Tomography) scan, before or during their treatment – and possibly many more. The scan could be needed to work out where the cancer is, how close it is to nearby organs, how big it is, how well treatment is working or as part of follow up treatment. Professor Jon Bell, Clinical Director of Radiology, says: “This development will enable us to deliver world leading care for every Christie patient.

Providing the latest imaging equipment isn’t just an upgrade with state-of-the-art technology – it’s an investment in precision, life, and hope. It will allow us to detect and treat cancer with greater accuracy giving clearer answers and greater peace of mind. A modern radiology department is at the frontline of cancer treatment and essential for better outcomes.” A CT scan, or CAT scan as it’s also known, uses X-rays taken from multiple angles around the body to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body. These cross-sectional images produce more detailed information than standard X-rays. CT scans play a crucial role at various points in a Christie patient’s cancer journey: • Determining cancer staging – size and location • Assessing whether the cancer has spread

• Planning effective treatment • Monitoring treatment progress
