CLEARER FUTURES A NEW SCANNING CENTRE

2

Every day families hear the life-altering words “You have cancer.” For many, precise treatment planning can mean the difference between life and death. BACKGROUND

At The Christie we urgently need to build a fit for purpose, modern scanning centre to house an advanced 4D CT scanner. The new scanner isn’t just an upgrade – it’s a huge leap forward in scanning allowing us to treat cancer smarter, faster, and more effectively. Scanning is one of the most important aspects of cancer treatment. With your support we can bring hope to the thousands of patients and families who walk through our doors each year. Thousands of Christie patients will have at least one CT (Computerised Tomography) scan, before or during their treatment – and possibly many more. The scan could be needed to work out where the cancer is, how close it is to nearby organs, how big it is, how well treatment is working or as part of follow up treatment. Professor Jon Bell, Clinical Director of Radiology, says: “This development will enable us to deliver world leading care for every Christie patient.

Providing the latest imaging equipment isn’t just an upgrade with state-of-the-art technology – it’s an investment in precision, life, and hope. It will allow us to detect and treat cancer with greater accuracy giving clearer answers and greater peace of mind. A modern radiology department is at the frontline of cancer treatment and essential for better outcomes.” A CT scan, or CAT scan as it’s also known, uses X-rays taken from multiple angles around the body to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body. These cross-sectional images produce more detailed information than standard X-rays. CT scans play a crucial role at various points in a Christie patient’s cancer journey: • Determining cancer staging – size and location • Assessing whether the cancer has spread

• Planning effective treatment • Monitoring treatment progress

THE NEED FOR A NEW SPACE

When originally built in 1980, our CT department was seeing just 20 patients a day. Now it is one of the busiest in the hospital seeing more than 15,000 patients a year (that’s almost 60 a day) with approximately 31,700 scans carried out a year.

Not surprisingly we have grown out of the current facilities and need more space and new equipment. The current department is no longer fit for purpose as it is cramped in both the waiting and treatment areas, with a muddled layout and very little privacy. The waiting area is no longer able to accommodate all our patients and relatives, and it is often difficult to find space for wheelchair users. The department has separate reception and waiting areas for CT scans, ultrasound, and X-rays, which can be confusing for patients and can add to their anxiety when attending the hospital for tests.

Due to the layout of the department, many of the administrative elements of the booking process, including patient queries, are handled in the reception area which can compromise patient confidentiality and privacy as conversations can be overheard. To improve outcomes for patients we carry out biopsies, not only for diagnosis purposes, but also for much needed research. Given the limited space in the department, it is difficult to perform these procedures, particularly when the patient has limited mobility and requires transport aids.

OUR VISION

The scanning department is the heartbeat of the hospital. A scan shows if the treatment’s worked, in which case it’s the best day in that patient’s life, or conversely it could show that it hasn’t worked and so they have to think about alternative treatments.”

To future proof the service and provide patients with the very best care and treatment, we need a new spacious fit-for-purpose facility, along with a state-of-the-art, high-tech 4D CT scanner. The new scanning centre will be built at the Wilmslow Road entrance to the hospital on the site of the former outpatients’ department. The current scanning department, which is in a different location, will continue to operate ensuring minimum disruption to patients and continuity of care while the build is underway. The Christie Charity is spearheading a major fundraising appeal for the construction of a multi-million pound scanning centre.

We plan to develop a bespoke, contemporary advanced scanning centre. This will deliver a marked improvement in the patient experience and ensure they receive their care in a modern, spacious environment, which provides comfort and privacy while also respecting their dignity. FEATURES AND BENEFITS

It will increase capacity in the department allowing us to see more patients each day and reduce waiting times. Patients are at the heart of everything we do at The Christie and so it is vital they not only receive the very best care, from the most qualified and caring staff, but that this is delivered in a welcoming environment with the latest high-tech equipment. Many patients will attend the CT department for several scans over the course of their treatment and so we want the experience to be as positive as possible.

The redevelopment of the department will include: • New consulting rooms • New patient preparation rooms • New scanning and control rooms • New patient recovery rooms • New ultrasound rooms • New X-ray rooms • New radiographer rooms • New waiting area • New reception area

Patients’ needs are firmly front and centre in the design of the new department, resulting in a much better patient experience.

The new department will transform our scanning offering at The Christie and will open up a world of opportunity for us allowing us to offer more pioneering treatments, research, and ground-breaking procedures.

As part of our plans to redevelop and modernise the CT scanning department, we are going to purchase an advanced 4D CT scanner. We cannot have the new scanner without redevelopment of the department, as on a very practical level, the new 4D CT scanner simply will not fit in the current space. NEW EQUIPMENT

The 4D CT scanner is the next step in imaging. It scans much faster than a 3D scanner and is more accurate. It uses a new technology that captures the location and movement of a tumour, as well as the movement of the patient’s organs to show how this affects the position of a tumour. This is vital for accurately treating tumours located on or near organs that move, such as the heart and lungs. For example, a tumour on the lung will move with each breath as the lung inflates and deflates. With traditional imaging the radiology team will only know the position of the tumour at one point in the breath and so while aiming at the tumour they may miss it and damage healthy tissue. To compensate, lower less effective levels of radiation may be used thus reducing the effectiveness of the entire treatment.

Through 4D CT, we will be able to deliver radiation within a certain interval in the breathing cycle. This means the radiation stops when the tumour isn’t in the right position thus allowing the use of higher, more effective levels of radiation. This in turn minimises the impact on healthy tissue and reduces the risk of treatment-related side effects. Not only will it allow us to scan more patients than ever before, and in less time, but it will also mean we can carry out procedures such as ablation (minimally invasive surgery) which enables us to target cancerous cells more precisely.
