Chinwag - Autumn 2019
MAKING THE HEADLINES As always the work of our staff, patients, volunteers and fundraisers has received lots of media attention over the last few months.
£4.5m donation hits the headlines The amazing £4.5m donation to our charity from businessman and philanthropist Ian Taylor made national and regional news in June, featured extensively by the BBC, ITV and local radio stations. The donation will support research into proton beam therapy for patients with head and neck cancers. Mr Taylor himself was treated in Switzerland in 2018 with proton beam therapy for throat cancer. Read more on page 8.
On the Horizon BBC Two Horizon went behind the scenes to tell the story of ‘one of the most expensive and ambitious projects NHS England has ever undertaken ’ – developing two high energy proton beam therapy centres here at The Christie and UCLH – University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The hour-long documentary was filmed over the course of three years and the team was given exclusive access at The Christie as we geared up to treat patients – eventually following one of our patients through their programme of treatment earlier this year.
Drug progress In July BBC North West Tonight featured a piece on olaparib being made available by NICE for ovarian cancer patients featuring an interview with Professor Gordon Jayson.
Getting ready to face the Alps In July, ITV Granada Reports featured Christie radiography aide, Emily Woodroofe who took part in the charity Alps trek despite losing her leg in a mountaineering accident three years ago.
Emily joined a whole team of
Christie colleagues and fundraisers on the four day trek from Switzerland to France via Italy.
