Day 3 COVID-19 negative test are risk assessed with the IPC team (in hours) or the duty manager team (out of hours).

Patients with excessive cough and sputum production are prioritised for placement in single rooms whilst awaiting testing.

All patients with respiratory symptoms are prioritised for single occupancy room placement pending results of tests. A section in the CWP emergency admission proforma indicates whether a patient requires a side room. These requests are reviewed by the patient flow team when coordinating and appropriately allocating beds for emergency admissions. Due to the vulnerability of our patient group; the majority of which have been classified as extremely clinically vulnerable at the start of the pandemic, the same protective IPC measures as previously described have been implemented for all our patients irrespective of the risk of severe outcomes of respiratory infection. Patients are given appropriate information prior to starting active treatments so informed consent to these potential risks can be obtained. Whilst it is still possible for some patients to undergo certain oncological treatments with confirmed respiratory infections this is not always the case. In these cases, patients testing positive for COVID-19 prior to or during treatment particularly SACT, haematological treatments or elective surgery have treatments delayed if this does not impact negatively on the patient’s outcomes. Patients at risk of severe outcomes of respiratory infection receive protective IPC measures depending on their medical condition and treatment whilst receiving healthcare e.g., priority for single room isolation and risk for their families and carers accompanying them for treatments/procedures must be considered. Where treatment is not urgent consider delaying this until resolution of symptoms providing this does not impact negatively on patient outcomes.
