The Christie International staff engagement event
On World Cancer Day in February, the staff engagement area by the Outpatients entrance showcased a map highlighting countries where colleagues are currently working with partners. Staff representing the consulting, education and research components of The Christie International shared their experiences and met colleagues involved in other international projects. Key projects included: supporting the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Nigeria, capacity-building initiatives in Egypt and Kenya, as well as a strategic alliance with Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Australia and a radiation oncology training programme in Toronto, Canada. The Christie digital world map was also updated on HIVE to coincide with World Cancer Day, pinpointing projects as well as our internationally diverse workforce. Award success for the nuclear medicine team A team of staff involved in the care of neuroendocrine cancer patients at The Christie is proud to have won a national award. Specialist charity Neuroendocrine Cancer UK chose the nuclear medicine team at The Christie as recipients of the Allied Health Professionals award. The awards honour the courage and resilience of patients with neuroendocrine tumours, the unwavering dedication of medical professionals, and the steadfast support of their friends and family. The nuclear medicine team and those who support them won for their “compassionate care, reassurance, and dedication that leaves every patient feeling truly supported”. The awards were open to nominations within the neuroendocrine cancer community to recognise their heroes. A panel, including Neuroendocrine Cancer UK ambassadors and healthcare professionals, then created a shortlist for each award category, and finally, members of the public cast almost 2,000 votes to choose the six winners.

Anne Marie Raftery
Doctorate for Anne-Marie Congratulations to Anne-Marie Raftery, Lead Palliative Care Nurse, who was recently awarded a Doctorate in Health and Social Care from The University of Salford. Her research focused on the experiences of healthcare assistants, porters, and domestics in the social organisation of end-of-life care. Using ethnography, she explored the everyday routines of care, bringing these to life through prose and poetry, revealing their invaluable contributions. Reflecting on her achievement, Anne-Marie said, “The intrinsically linked nature of research to the workplace through a Professional Doctorate was very appealing. Undertaking a doctorate part-time while working full-time in healthcare during COVID was challenging but made possible through the support, direction, and sense of community at the University of Salford. I have been supported in producing clinically relevant, meaningful, and creative qualitative research, which has enabled me to develop both personally and professionally.” We wish Anne-Marie the best of luck for her graduation later this year and look forward to seeing how her research continues to impact patient care.
