Research & Innovation Manchester has been designated as one of 20 Biomedical Research Centres across England. Of a total fund of £800 million Manchester has been allocated £59.1 million. Many of the themes in the award relate to cancer. More details of the award and themes will be provided in future reports. The NIHR research reset programme is reviewing resource allocation to trials that might have stalled in recruitment through the pandemic. Our overall position is good, our trials activity remains high compared to other cancer centres and our recruitment broadly in line with expected levels. The research strategy continues to develop with a focus on the future workforce and digital infrastructure that will be required to maintain competitive, clinically relevant research embedded in our patient care pathways. Research at our other sites will also begin to scale up in the coming months. Successes include: • Two Christie nurses have awarded prestigious NIHR pre-doctoral fellowships • At the NIHR GM CRN awards Dr Emma Searle, Consultant in Haemato-Oncology, won the Early Career Researcher Award. The Lymphoma Research Team won the ‘Putting participants first’ award. The melanoma research team were shortlisted for the outstanding achievement by a team award. • At the Annual European Society of Medical Oncology Meeting held in Paris in early September there were over 40 papers presented by Christie researchers. • We have had 17 abstracts accepted for post and oral presentation at the annual UKONS conference in Belfast, November 2022. • MyChrisite-MyHealth ePROMs won the GM Cancer Alliance Innovation Award, 18 October Responsible Director: Professor Fiona Blackhall Responsible Assurance Committee - Quality Education Taught student and postgraduate clinical education has returned to full face-face levels of activity, with CPD related output remaining strong through a mixed/hybrid delivery format. Excellent progress has been made in progressing the Christie Education strategy and its integration within wider clinical service, research and outcomes strategies. Recognition of education excellence continues to grow e.g., positive internal evaluation of new initiatives to support junior doctor transition; external regional awards and invited presentations/keynote addresses. Our Sustainable Development Management Plan sets out our actions to achieve net carbon zero - recent achievements include the installation of solar panels and installation of electric vehicle charging points. Progress against the plan has been scrutinised by our management board and audit committee and reported to our Governor led Sustainability and Development Committee. We will complete work on our Carbon Energy Fund Scheme in February 2023, this includes installation of photovoltaic cells, battery energy saving storage, LED energy efficient lighting upgrades and replacement of our boiler plant - this will save 1025 tonnes of carbon per year and Responsible Director - Director of Education Responsible Assurance Committee - Quality Sustainability
